Newborn Experience Guide
Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of the sweetest and most meaningful seasons of life. My goal during your newborn session is to create a calm, comfortable experience while capturing genuine connection, timeless details, and the beauty of this season exactly as it is. This guide was made to help you plan and prep for your newborn experience.
Capturing Your Baby’s First Days
Tiny details. Real connection. Timeless memories.
Whether your session is lifestyle-focused, wrapped, or a blend of both, my approach is always relaxed and baby-led. Sessions are designed with plenty of time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and cuddles so there is never any pressure to rush.
I use a combination of natural light and professional flash lighting to create soft, clean, and timeless images while keeping your baby comfortable throughout the entire session.
The goal is not perfection. It’s preserving this season exactly as it feels.
Lifestyle Newborn Sessions
Lifestyle newborn sessions focus on natural connection and storytelling within your home. These sessions are lightly posed and centered around genuine interaction with your family.
What to Expect
- Relaxed, baby-led pacing
- Natural interactions and connection-focused images
- Photos in spaces like the nursery, master bedroom, or living room
- A mix of candid moments and lightly guided posing
- Parents and siblings encouraged throughout the session
- Lifestyle Session Preparation
Lifestyle Preparation
Encourage Some Awake Time Before the Session
If possible, try to keep baby awake for a little while before the session begins. This can help them settle into a deeper sleep once the session starts. Newborns naturally sleep often, so there is absolutely no pressure if this does not happen. If baby happens to be awake for portions of the session, that is completely okay and often leads to some beautiful natural moments. However, if baby is especially uncomfortable, inconsolable, or not feeling well the day of the session, we may discuss rescheduling if needed.
Let the Light In
Open blinds and curtains in the rooms with the best natural light, usually the master bedroom and living room.
Tidy the Main Spaces
There is no need to deep clean your entire home. Simply tidy the areas where photos will take place.
Make the Bed
Neutral-colored bedding such as whites, creams, or beige tones photographs best and creates a timeless look. If vibrant tones and patterns are your vibe though please keep true to you.
Turn Off Overhead Lights
I primarily use natural light with some fill flash during lifestyle portions of the session, so overhead lighting is usually unnecessary.
The “Milk-Drunk” Belly
Feed your baby a full feeding right before the session begins so they are sleepy, relaxed, and content.
Family Preparation for Lifestyle Experiences
What to Wear
Stick to soft, comfortable, neutral clothing such as whites, creams, grays, or earthy tones. Avoid bright colors, large logos, or busy patterns that may distract from the connection and emotion in the images.
Coordinate with Siblings
Dress siblings simply and comfortably so the focus stays on your family’s connection and your newest little addition.
Relax & Trust the Process
Toddlers and newborns are unpredictable and that is completely okay. Some of the sweetest moments happen naturally in between the “perfect” poses.
Wrapped Newborn Experiences
Posed newborn sessions focus more on baby individually with wrapped poses, swaddled setups, blankets, props, and detail images. These sessions require a warmer environment and typically involve more soothing and settling.
What to Expect
- Baby-focused posing and wrapped setups
- Swaddles, blankets, headbands, hats, or simple props
- A slower paced session with breaks as needed
- Plenty of time for feeding and comforting baby
- Soft posing with safety always prioritized first
Wrapped Preparation
Encourage Some Awake Time Before the Session
If possible, try to keep baby awake for 1–2 hours before the session begins. This often helps baby settle into a deeper sleep for posed portions of the session. Of course, newborns love to sleep, so just do your best. Awake moments are completely normal and not the end of the world. If baby is especially uncomfortable, inconsolable, or having a particularly difficult day, we can always discuss rescheduling if needed to ensure the best experience for both baby and parents.
The “Milk-Drunk” Belly
Feed your baby a full feeding right before the session begins so they are sleepy, relaxed, and content.
Turn Up the Heat
A warm cozy baby is a happy sleepy baby! Newborns are most comfortable warm and cozy. Keeping your home around 75–80°F helps baby stay comfortable during posed portions of the session. You do not have to do this but it can help during the session. Please know it may not be needed during Texas summers or heatwaves.
Dress Baby Simply
Dress baby in a loose, easy-to-remove sleeper or button-up onesie to avoid marks on their skin before the session.
Keep Essentials Nearby
Have diapers, wipes, burp cloths, extra bottles if needed, and a pacifier nearby during the session.
Swaddles & Blankets
If you have sentimental swaddles, blankets, or heirloom items you would like incorporated, feel free to have them ready.
Studio Rental Options
For families wanting a more controlled indoor environment or a brighter studio-style look, studio rentals are also available for newborn sessions.
Studios are a great option if:
- Your home does not have a lot of natural light
- You prefer a clean, minimal studio setting
- You want a neutral indoor location without preparing your home
- You are interested in a more styled or editorial look
Studio rentals are booked separately from the session fee and will vary depending on the studio selected and rental length. I’m happy to recommend studio options that best fit the style and feel you are looking for. Most studios include large natural light windows, neutral furnishings, and a cozy environment that photographs beautifully for both lifestyle and wrapped/posed newborn images.
